8 Best Organic Laundry Detergents: A Closer Look
Unfortunately traditional laundry detergents are chock full of questionable, even harmful, ingredients. Obviously no one wants to be exposed to toxic chemicals, but it’s also extremely important to keep them out of our washing machine wastewater — some of which eventually ends up in our lakes, streams and waterways.
So what to do? The good news is there are tons of effective, nontoxic, affordable choices out there, and we’re here to make the switch to natural laundry detergents even simpler.
A quick note: while most of the detergents on our list aren’t certified organic, many are EPA Safer Choice Certified, certified BioBased, etc. None contain synthetic dyes, phosphates, artificial brighteners or other concerning ingredients so common in traditional laundry detergents.

What to Look for in the Best Organic Laundry Detergents
1
Skip the nasties.
Whether it’s artificial dyes, phthalates, nonylphenol ethoxylates, ammonium, or the particularly harmful 1,4-dioxane: we won’t freak you out with an exhaustive list of all of the chemicals and additives that find their way into most big name laundry detergents. Most of the time, the worst chemicals aren’t even listed on the packaging!
2
Avoid imposters.
Most of the big brands are cashing in on the trend toward gentler, more environmentally-friendly laundry detergents. And if that’s all you can find, those are certainly better options than traditional versions. However, we recommend sticking with the tried and true natural companies who are actively committed to making products that bypass all potentially harmful chemicals, like those on our list.
3
Which is the most eco-friendly format: liquid, powder, pods, or sheets?
Unfortunately, the most common form of laundry detergent is still the least-sustainable large plastic tub full of liquid. But that’s rapidly changing! Alternatives include ultra-concentrated liquids, old-fashioned laundry powder (often in a recyclable box), or some prefer the convenience of naturally formulated pods. Newer on the scene are laundry sheets.
As this truly eco-friendly option becomes more widely available, we can see laundry sheets taking up much more of our future “best of” detergent lists.
Our Process
For this guide on organic laundry detergent, our team spent 6 hours researching the most popular options from over 30 brands and manufacturers big and small. We then read about 200 user reviews (both positive and negative) to discover what shoppers thought about each detergent. After comparing this data, we narrowed our list down to the top 8 best organic laundry detergents on the market. You can count on this research to guide you to a mindful purchasing decision.
